Microsoft changed the Update mechanism in Windows, and if you have a pretty old Windows 7 installation, the Windows Update Service will take forever to find and apply patches.

Prerequisites

Installation

Stop Windows Update Service

  1. Open Control Panel - Administration Tools - Services
  2. Search for Windows Update Service and stop it

Install Windows Update Service fix

  1. Start the installer and go through the sections.

Install April 2015 fix

  1. Open Control Panel - Administration Tools - Services
  2. Search for Windows Update Service and stop it
  3. Start the installer and go through the sections.

Install July 2016 fix

  1. Open Control Panel - Administration Tools - Services
  2. Search for Windows Update Service and stop it
  3. Start the installer and go through the sections.

Updating Windows

If the configuration was successful, Windows Update now should find the new patches and you can install them.
